01. Digital transformation is changing the pattern of steel production
Scorching, dirty, noisy and massive – this is the old norm on steel production sites. However, the future scenario of thyssenkrupp steel production now looks slightly different – quiet, clean and cool. Digital transformation is playing an increasingly important role in the production of more than 2,000 steel products from thyssenkrupp. Whether it's developing new materials or modifying products to meet customer needs, including completing modifications in a short period of time, or optimizing logistics and warehousing processes, steel companies must be able to generate data and make it available to customers in real time if they want to remain competitive.

Effectively meeting the challenges of digital transformation requires an up-to-date IT infrastructure that can meet a range of key requirements.
1. Such infrastructure must be adapted to the needs of production facilities
2. Authorized users must be allowed reliable access to all necessary data to ensure smooth and seamless production operations.
3. The confidentiality of the company's internal core business must be ensured and protected from physical and virtual attacks.
4. Such infrastructure must also have the highest possible level of standardization and maintenance-free to minimize the workload of internal staff and external service providers.
In short, container-based IT systems are able to meet these requirements.
02. Container-based IT system
The integrated solution is designed as a standard container and is available in two sizes. The IT equipment for production at each production facility should be gradually transferred to this container. Containers should be placed on easily accessible plots adjacent to the factory in question. The containers should be assembled and assembled according to the same scheme, and each component should be marked with its own product number (from the temperature control unit to the fire alarm/extinguishing system, to the rack itself, and even the precise length and identification of cables and connectors). As a result, the integrated solution is actually a set of twin digital components for the secure maintenance of MicroDCs and the management of virtual resources. Valuable and sensitive internal operations should always be protected by a rugged steel cabinet.

03. Ready to go! The upgrade project will be completed within six weeks
The two companies had 12 months to prepare the first container in Duisburg South, before it was officially put into operation. In fact, Rittal installed a pair of shipping containers for this project to allow thyssenkrupp to back up production data in two identical twin digitization components using its own power supply. Eventually, the hard work paid off. After the installation of the first digital twin in Duisburg South, it is now only six weeks to complete the entire process of taking another digital twin from order to start-up in just six weeks. Eventually, a fourth set of twin digital components was housed in the management data center, where one could monitor the operation of all other containers. Is the temperature control system operating reliably? Is the power supply stable? Are servers and IT processes stable?
