Houston, United States, October 20, 2021 -- Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced that Ultium Cells, LLC, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors (GM), will use Honeywell's Quality Control System (QCS) to ensure the quality and integrity of lithium battery products at its new facility. The 260,000-square-meter plant in Lordstown, Ohio, United States, is estimated to be completed in 2022 and will produce lithium-ion batteries for a wide range of electric cars for GM brands such as Cadillac and Hummer and will be among the largest electric car battery plants in the United States.
Honeywell's Quality Control System will provide a platform for compact, high-precision scanners and areal density sensors on four production lines at the facility. By measuring the weight of the electrode coating, a critical parameter in battery production, the system assists Ultium CELLS in meeting critical quality requirements. In addition, Honeywell's modular platform and proven expertise allow Ultium CELLS to keep up with battery production trends and get used to new measurement and handling skills to ensure long-term business success.

The formation of Ultium CELLS is part of GM's long-term strategy to produce a full range of zero-emission, all-electric cars and trucks by 2035. Batteries are an important step away from fossil fuels, offering a broad prospect for a full shift in passenger transport to electric and autonomous vehicles. The batteries produced at the Lordstown plant are characterized by high performance, capable of a range of up to 640 km (400 miles), fast charging and long service life, which require strict quality control during the production process.
