DES PRANS, Ill., United States, November 1, 2021 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today introduced a new flow battery technology that stores wind and solar energy to meet the need for energy storage for sustainable energy. The new flow battery uses a safe, non-flammable electrolyte that converts chemical energy into electrical energy to store energy for subsequent use, while meeting the utility's environmental, long-lasting, and safety goals.
Honeywell's new technology provides utilities with greater flexibility and longer energy storage durability. These batteries store energy for use when there is no wind and solar power, power outages, and when the grid is running at full capacity. It can be stored and discharged for up to 12 hours, far exceeding the discharge time of only 4 hours for lithium batteries. The battery is designed with recyclable components that will not degrade over time, providing reliable system performance for 20 years and cost-effectively.
The flow battery technology will be tested by Duke Energy at its Emerging Technology and Innovation Center in Mount Holly, North Carolina. The company has more than a decade of experience testing a wide range of battery chemistries and has deployed several large-scale energy storage projects across the United States.
Honeywell plans to deliver a 400-kilowatt-hour battery unit to Duke Energy's site in Mount Hawley in 2022. With the large-scale deployment of such batteries, Duke Energy will be able to make better use of solar and wind power while reducing the use of thermal power plants. These renewable energy sources are becoming more and more cost-competitive than traditional fossil fuels. Honeywell plans to deploy a 60-megawatt-hour utility-scale pilot project starting in 2023.

Honeywell flow batteries can also be combined with Experion® PKS, Honeywell's integrated process, business and asset management system, and the Connected Factory, an enterprise performance management solution, for remote monitoring. The combination of this technology and renewables is expected to provide utilities and independent power generation companies with a complete, integrated energy storage solution to help achieve net-zero emissions goals. The system will also make Honeywell one of the first vertically integrated, end-to-end energy storage solution providers from battery manufacturing to integration, controls, energy management systems and performance contracts.
