01 Background
OEM customers located in East China have highly customized products. The number of products per order ranges from 2 to 3 million pieces. As a result, such medium-volume, high-mix plants require greater flexibility and scalability of the solution. After learning about the different robotic solutions, the customer turned to collaborative robotics. They tried to introduce the cobot into the injection moulding unit of the motor's plastic end cap for loading and unloading.
02 pain points
This station has only one machine, which is guarded by a worker. The machine needs to put the finished product neatly into the box. Due to the low processing cycle time, workers inevitably incur a lot of waiting time while waiting for processing equipment. The customer initially considered using an industrial robot to transfer materials. After all, this mechanically repetitive action is not complicated and can be done by robots. However, the production line has been completed for a long time. In addition, with the upgrading of the process and the increase of user demand, more and more equipment has been added one after another, resulting in limited space in the production line, and it is difficult to add new equipment. In particular, safety fences must be installed around traditional industrial robots.
03 Solution
Loading and unloading with EC66 injection molding machine is not complicated. After an on-site evaluation, ELITE robotics application engineers and integrators determined the entire movement flow of the robot. There is a large gap between the discharge port of the injection molding machine and the discharging place. Therefore, a small conveyor belt is set up under the outlet of the injection molding machine. The linear module takes out the material and places it on the conveyor belt, and then the cobot handles the material and stacks it on the left and right sides to complete the packaging. In this application, a worker initially operates a robot, generating a lot of idle time. If one worker is responsible for two or more machines, that worker has to travel to and from each piece of equipment, resulting in a large workload. Now, with cobots, one worker can take care of four machines, and this worker's main job is to manually collect materials when the totes are full. If there are other types of injection moulded parts on this line, the cobot can immediately call up the corresponding program and quickly start a new job after a simple commissioning.
