Background:

A robotics integrator based in Jiangsu Province that provides engineering, manufacturing, and integration solutions to 3C manufacturers. They recently equipped a Taiwan electronics factory with composite robots for handling and inspection tasks. With the help of cobots, the factory improved production quality, reduced human error, and increased operational efficiency by 20 percent, while saving about 15 percent of the working space. By integrating cobots into the production process, workers are able to perform tasks that require higher skills and generate higher added value.

Pain point:

At present, the transfer of materials between the subsequent process sites of the production line still relies on manual labor, and the material transfer between stations is done manually. The factory wanted to realize the automatic connection between the simplex stations, but due to the limited space in the plant, it was not suitable for large-scale changes and layout adjustments. Therefore, they urgently need to find a lightweight and less risky solution to try.

Solution:

The factory approached an integrator and hoped they would be able to provide a solution. After an on-site assessment, the integrator suggested that the plant try a hybrid robot. The AGV takes the workpiece from the previous workbench with the robotic arm, and sends it to the testing table for unloading, and then the equipment conducts dimensional and appearance inspection, and the robot takes the workpiece and sends it to the next testing station for testing after the inspection is completed. The composite robot is composed of an AGV laser navigation trolley, an ELITE EC66 (6kg load) collaborative robot and a Dahuan gripper. Compared with traditional industrial robots, the ELITE cobot has a low power consumption, with an average power of 250W for a 6kg load robot, and the optional 48V DC powered version can draw power directly from the AGV trolley. Due to the low power consumption and small structure of the collaborative robot, the loss of the load capacity of the AGV is relatively small, and there is no need to charge the trolley frequently in actual operation, which shortens the downtime and improves the production efficiency.

"It's been 2 months since the robot was introduced, and we're quite satisfied with this mobile platform," the factory gave a good evaluation: "The combination of cobots and AGVs provides us with an ideal solution, and the whole system is very smart, in addition to being able to complete the scheduled action, it does not take up space." To be honest, this is what I envision the material handling and inspection tools to look like on a modern production line. "Small size also has a big effect, and I believe that the combination of collaborative robots and AGVs will bring more surprises to users in the future.
