In recent years, with the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT), a wide variety of robots can be remotely controlled via wireless networks. In addition, in the robotics industry, where the market is expected to expand, there is a need to evolve from work that uses a single robot to work in collaboration with multiple robots.
However, when attempting to remotely coordinate control a robot that requires high-precision real-time control over a wireless network, precise coordinated control cannot be achieved because the data and control instructions from the robot cannot arrive in time due to communication delays.
As an open innovation with NEC, Japan Electronics has realized real-time, high-precision coordinated robot control by fusing the company's wireless communication technology with Japan's motor synchronization technology.
In this coordinated control of smart motors using wireless, a high-precision probabilistic model for latency in various wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi and LTE, was discovered, and communication delay prediction was realized using this probabilistic model (Note 3).
This communication delay prediction technology makes it possible to predict how long it will take for information (position, speed, torque, etc.) to be transmitted from the Intelligent Motor™, and how long it will be delayed for the arrival of control commands (position, speed commands) sent to the Intelligent Motor™.
Communication delay prediction enables remote real-time control, including communication delay, by accurately estimating the state of the Intelligent Motor™ when a control command arrives and performing advance control based on the presumed future state (Note 4).
By synchronizing the communication technology with these characteristics with Japan Electco's Intelligent Motor™ technology, which has a built-in compact computer, multiple Intelligent Motors™ are closely linked to each other, achieving high-precision synchronization and coordinated control of multiple robots equipped with Intelligent Motors™. In addition, the expensive control computer required for conventional robots has been eliminated. As a result, for example, in the handling business of factories and warehouses, it is possible to combine and coordinate multiple low-cost small AGVs instead of expensive large AGVs to move goods of various shapes and weights, which is conducive to reducing operating costs.
As examples of the application of this technology, we are advancing the demonstration and commercialization of social systems in a variety of fields, such as automated guided vehicles in factories and warehouses, security robots, survey robots in the event of disasters, and remote control of drones used for inspection and delivery of parcels.
