Improvements to the motor housing structure and high-density winding design have made the idea of a "portable car" a reality

Today, all types of transportation, including cars, scooters, and scooters, are moving towards electrification. Among them, an electric "portable car" with the characteristics of "standing driving" and "four-wheel stable driving" has attracted wide attention in the market with its unique creativity and conception. It is shaped like a 13-inch laptop that can be carried around in a backpack and can reach a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour. In the future, if the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Law can be relaxed, this product will definitely become a fashionable and advanced means of transportation for people's daily travel

The new mobility vehicle is equipped with a small hub motor newly developed by Japan Servo Corporation. The in-wheel motor has many characteristics, such as simplifying and downsizing the design of the body structure by virtue of its independent drive, and also improving the quietness and weight reduction of the motor by eliminating the need for a gear reducer

The fully improved motor rigidity and small high-power output performance fully meet the technical requirements of this new travel tool

In addition to ensuring the weight reduction and downsizing of the product itself, the WALKCAR also fully considers the power performance required to carry an adult and whether it can withstand external forces such as bounce, shake, and impact caused by uneven road surfaces, up and down shoulders, and blind roads during driving. In order to meet the above technical requirements, Japan Servo decided to comprehensively improve the basic structure of the motor on the basis of the original hub motor.

The internal structure of a hub motor is generally divided into two parts: a rotatable outer rotor and a base that functions as a fixing bracket, including a fixing ring. There is only one connection between the base and the outer rotor, and the speed of the rotor will deviate under the action of external force.

As shown in the figure below, in order to further improve the overall rigidity of the motor, the retaining ring is fixed to the bearing, so that the retaining ring rotates with the bearing. There is only one part of the flange on the base (fixed part), and the fixation, yoke sleeve and hub are welded together (integrated) to improve rigidity.

By welding the retaining ring connecting the fixed shaft to the hub of the motor housing, the motor housing and the base become a complete rotating body, effectively improving the overall rigidity of the motor.

In addition, in order to meet the customer's request to upgrade the conventional motor with a diameter of 60 mm and a power output of 30 W to a high-power motor with the same diameter and a power of 65 W, we changed the design of a high-density winding with a higher density of 14 poles and 12 slots to a higher density of 14 poles and 12 slots in addition to the previous 10-pole and 12-slot winding. In this way, the magnetic flux can be increased to increase the torque, and at the same time, the problem of periodic torque ripple decline can be reduced.

The use of highly flexible wires and the reduction of speed deviation bring users a more stable and safe sense of control

In order to prevent problems such as wiring breakage or detachment of internal magnetic blocks due to vibration during driving, we have re-improved the materials used and the production process. Finally, in terms of materials, we decided to use highly flexible wires with higher flexibility; In terms of production process, we make our own special tools and cooperate with the new production process to make the glue applied thinner and more uniform. Through the above two improvements, the durability of the hub motor is effectively improved.

The WALKCAR is a purely electric mobility tool with a very short wheelbase of less than 200 mm. Generally speaking, the longer the wheelbase of the transportation tool, the higher the stability when driving in a straight line, but for the WALKCAR, which is characterized by its lightness and compactness, the wheelbase is greatly limited. In addition, the WALKCAR is driven by two hub motors in the front wheels when driving, and if the speed of the left and right hub motors deviates, the WALKCAR will not be able to drive in a straight line. In the production process of conventional motors, there is a tolerance of 10 to 15% in the motor speed tolerance, but the motor for the WALKCAR requires that the speed deviation be controlled within 5%.

To do this, we readjusted the mounting position of the magnetic flux sensor inside the motor. Under normal circumstances, the speed deviation caused by the installation position of the sensor is completely negligible, but in order to meet the technical requirements of WALKCAR, we have successfully controlled the speed deviation within the range of ±5% by installing a special jig and an automatic detector with accurate monitoring programs.

We sincerely hope that this small, lightweight, durable, and high-power in-wheel motor developed through the above improvements will be more widely used in various transportation tools such as unmanned guided vehicles, electric mopeds, and service robots.
