Nidec Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Nidec") has developed a new electric power steering motor power pack*1 (hereinafter referred to as "EPS-PP": Electric Power Steering Motor Power Pack).
Nidec has been developing and producing EPS motors since the 90s, which are now used by a wide range of automakers around the world.
EPS is mainly used in cylindrical types for small automobiles and rack type for a wide range of luxury cars. In recent years, cylindrical types have also been required to have the same smooth steering performance as rack and pinion types. At the same time, the market is demanding further price reductions. In addition, due to the spread of ADAS*2 functions, it is necessary to reduce the friction and torque ripple*3 performance of the entire steering system in order to operate ADAS functions such as lane keeping assist.
In the past, the method of improving steering performance was to improve how to reduce friction and torque fluctuations in the motor and EPS structure during the design stage, but the problem was that the cost was too high.
Nidec's newly developed EPS-PP solves the problem of artificial steering sensation that had existed in the past by sequentially detecting and correcting the friction and torque fluctuations between the motor and the EPS structure. As a result, the management of friction and torque fluctuations in motors and EPS structures, which have been expensive to countermeasure, has been eased, and costs can be reduced without sacrificing performance.
In addition, it has become possible to reduce the cost of motor materials. For example, the electromagnetic steel sheet material that has been used to reduce the torque loss caused by friction can be replaced by a low-specification material.
Due to the above characteristics, this product has attracted the attention of many EPS manufacturers, and we have received inquiries from many customers at this stage.
*1 Power pack: A general term for a 2-in-1 product with an electric motor and electronic control unit (ECU).
*2 ADAS: A general term for driver assistance functions such as replacing the driver's control of the vehicle by accurately displaying and warning information to the driver by controlling the vehicle's surroundings to ensure the safety and comfort of the driver.
*3 Torque fluctuation: The amount of torque fluctuation output by the motor during rotation. Torque fluctuations are the cause of noise and vibration in motors.
