The trend towards utility integration has never stopped
"No other innovation has had such an impact on automation or created such a sustainable way to reduce production costs and increase capacity," comments Eberhard Klotz, Head of Product and Skills Marketing at Festo.
Festo combines electronic and pneumatic modules as closely as possible, for example, the CPX automation channel with a motion control module, a pneumatic servo positioning system, a pressure sensor module, a share pressure control valve and a complete solution plan for safety skills.
With our OMNIMATE device connectivity know-how, we are also pushing the trend towards functional integration. PCB terminal blocks and connectors can be used to integrate the most functions in a small space. It is therefore no surprise that Festo has decided to use the connection components from Weidmüller for its CPX-L IP20 remote I/O modules. Festo has benefited a lot from the collaboration with Weidmüller, as we have many years of knowledge in the field of device connection know-how and Festo has received a lot of support from Weidmüller in the design process.
Solid craftsmanship and fast connection skills
"The LSF-SMD series of Weidmüller PCB terminal blocks is a surface mount device (SMD) in the true sense of the word, which fully satisfies the requirements of a fully automated PCB printed circuit board installation," explains Stephan Ruhnau, Product Manager at Weidmüller, about Festo's decision to select the connection components.
"The LCP insulation guarantees a high degree of structural stability without blistering, so there is no need for pre-drying. The LSF-SMD has 2 solder pins per 1 pin, which can be securely attached to the circuit board without the need for a rated device flange. The use of reel packaging with a standard width enables efficient automatic placement of the device. The optimised placement suction cups ensure safety and reliability in the fully automated SMT mounting process. ”
LSF-SMD provides a user-friendly interface for Festo's CPX-L I/O modules: "The requirement was to have a large number of digital input and output channels in the smallest possible PCB space. Together, the connection should be simple and easy to operate," explains Hrvoje Vuksanovic, Product Manager at Festo.
Weidmüller offers a good solution for the LSF-SMD. The distance of 3.5 mm and the direction of the conductor exit are 180°, which allows for a high assembly density in an area with a large joint cross-sectional area of 1.5 mm2.
"The positive result of this program for us is a reduction in the number of printed circuit boards and the associated housing size," Vuksanovic happily adds. Another advantage of the LSD-SMD PCB terminal blocks is the PUSH IN connection system – the spring-clamp connection of Weidmüller's Push-in technology. Direct, tool-free connection ensures a secure touch. The built-in release button supports easy and convenient wire removal. Compared to the screw connection method, the PUSH IN wiring can save up to 70% of the wiring time, compared to the shrapnel connection skill can only save about 40% of the time.
