The S7-200 SMART CPU module offers 5VDC and 24VDC power supplies:
The CPU has an internal power supply that is used to power the CPU, expansion modules, signal boards, and other 24 VDC user power needs. Use the following information as a guide to determine how much power (or current) the CPU can provide to the configuration.
Refer to the technical specifications for your specific CPU to determine the 24 VDC sensor power budget, the 5 VDC logic budget provided by the CPU, and the 5 VDC power requirements for expansion modules and signal boards. Refer to Calculating the Power Budget to determine how much power (or current) the CPU can provide to your configuration.
The CPU provides 5 VDC logical power to all expansion modules in the system. Pay special attention to the system configuration to ensure that the CPU can provide the 5 VDC power required by the selected expansion module. If the power required by the configuration is beyond the power supply provided by the CPU, some modules must be removed.
If the CPU power budget is exceeded, the maximum number of modules allowed by the CPU may not be connected.
The CPU also provides a 24V sensor power supply, which can provide 24V power for input points, relay coil power on expansion modules, or other needs. The common side (M) of the different power supplies must be manually connected together.
If an external 24 VDC power supply is required, make sure that the power supply is not connected in parallel with the sensor power supply of the CPU. In order to improve the protection against electrical noise, it is recommended to connect the common terminals (M) of different power supplies together.
Paralleling an external 24 VDC power supply with the power supply for the CPU's 24 VDC sensor can cause a conflict between the two power supplies, as each power supply tries to establish its own preferred output voltage level. This conflict can lead to a shortened life of one or both power supplies or an immediate failure, resulting in unplanned operation of the PLC system. Accidental operation can result in death, serious injury, or damage to equipment. The CPU's DC sensor power supply and any external power supply should be powered to different points. Allows multiple public ends to be connected together.
Some of the 24 VDC power input ports in the S7-200 SMART system are interconnected and connect multiple M-terminals via a common logic circuit. For example, when specified as "non-isolated" in the datasheet, the following circuits are interconnected: 24 VDC for the CPU, power input for the relay coil for EM, or power supply for the non-isolated analog input. All non-isolated M-terminals must be connected to the same external reference potential.
Connecting the non-isolated M-terminals to a different reference potential will result in an unexpected current that may cause damage to the PLC and any connected equipment or allow for indeterminacy. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in equipment damage or uncertain operation, which in turn can result in death, serious injury, and property damage. It is important to ensure that all non-isolated M-terminals in the S7-200 SMART system are connected to the same reference potential.
