Eaton Vehicle Group sees Industry 4.0 as an operational and information-enabled technology that enables autonomous production systems that support interconnection, optimization, transparency, foresight and agility. These technologies include: augmented reality, rapid application development, autonomous robotics, digital simulation, and additive manufacturing, powered by an integrated ecosystem.

Enhance security by connecting remotely via 3D image display
To enable remote assistance and important activities, the Vehicle Group team uses Microsoft's HoloLens 2 augmented reality glasses. The glasses are capable of displaying 3D images in a physical space and connecting them remotely. This remote assistance technology ensures that work continues while keeping all staff safe.
Enhance training and speed up the review process with augmented reality
Augmented reality also helps with knowledge retention and ongoing training. For example, the Vehicle Group found that the technology could be used to train operators and engineers in the use of new equipment, which had previously been conducted by instructors traveling to remote locations. In addition, the technology is field-proven and critical for near-term customer reviews and approvals.
Reduce costs, improve quality, and shorten delivery times with data analytics
Eaton Vehicle Group is implementing the interconnection of plant systems and machines to collect, analyze and report real-time information to optimize factory floor management and monitor production issues in real time for quick and timely resolution. These initiatives by Eaton Vehicle Group are aimed at reducing delivery times; Reduce maintenance repair and operation (MRO) costs, inventory costs, indirect/direct labor costs; and improved performance and quality.
Leverage robots to achieve safe distances and increase productivity
To optimize manufacturing processes and avoid the use of forklifts and other human-operated transport machinery, vehicle groups are using autonomous automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). In addition to improving logistics throughout production facilities, AMRs and autonomous AGVs can improve safety and ensure social distancing while reducing costs.
COBOTs, a robot that interacts with humans in a shared space or works safely in close proximity, can now be used to safely handle complex, repetitive tasks. This improves consistency and accuracy in the production process.
Improve productivity with digital analogue technology
The vehicle group also utilizes digital simulation applications to determine which solution and/or combination of factors will deliver the highest output, resulting in increased productivity. These applications can run a variety of scenarios by changing parameters such as the number of operators, work-in-progress materials, cycle times, operator standardization, and so on. Currently, these applications are used to define new manufacturing cells and assembly lines, or to redesign existing manufacturing cells and assembly lines. In most cases, the vehicle group can increase productivity by 10 to 30 percent by increasing output or reducing the required investment.
Accelerate the process with 3D printing for in-house manufacturing tools
Using polymers and metals, additive manufacturing enables the in-house design and production of tools, error-proofing devices and fixtures at Eaton, improving safety, quality and efficiency. This enables rapid response times (shorter delivery times), lower procurement costs, and highly customized solutions. For example, delivery times can be reduced from weeks to days, while costs can be reduced from thousands to hundreds.
