Bosch Rexroth and Maximator Hydrogen (Maximator Advanced Technologies) have jointly developed an efficient hydrogen compression solution for hydrogen refueling stations, storage facilities and pipelines. This option makes it possible to use green hydrogen more cost-effectively in passenger cars, commercial vehicles and railway vehicles. Maximator Hydrogen's new MAX Compression 2.0 compressor halves the total cost of ownership for operators today. Bosch Rexroth is offering a scalable and easy-to-maintain system solution for the automatic replacement of energy-efficient drive seals for compressors. Maximator Hydrogen plans to build 4,000 new hydrogen fueling stations worldwide by 2030 and launch them in the first half of 2023.

The new jointly developed solution enables hydrogen refueling of fuel cells or combustion engines directly from the tank, eliminating the need for intermediate storage at high pressures. The adoption of this technology can improve the cost efficiency of hydrogen refueling stations and reduce the required investment costs. In addition, the MAX Compression 2.0 compressor unit can be expanded if necessary. Operators entering the industry can choose from cost-effective options with scalable drives in the range of 75 kW to 250 kW, or they can further expand the solution as needed.

The public transport service provider Vienna Bus will be a pilot customer. The Austria metropolis has set a goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040, and by 2030, city buses will be completely powered by green hydrogen. For around 1,000 vehicles with a daily mileage of 400 km, CO2-related emissions reductions could reach around 290 tonnes per year.

Bosch Rexroth is a close development partner and system supplier for the energy-efficient MAX Compression 2.0 compressor drives. The main components of the complete solution include an electro-hydraulic drive solution that controls power based on demand, two custom drive cylinder units, and electronic and digital power control technology including software. Thanks to the vertical arrangement of the pistons and precise digital monitoring, the new solution not only operates quietly, but also significantly increases the frequency. The high-precision process control system ensures that the piston movement maximizes the use of compression space, thus increasing the efficiency of use. Compared to its predecessor, MAX Compression 2.0 delivers up to five times more output in the same space.

Maximator Hydrogen has also succeeded in reducing the operating and maintenance costs of the development collaborators themselves, with the optimised "Automatic Seal Change System" (ASX) with Bosch Rexroth being one of the main factors. The piston seals are worn out by contact with hydrogen and must be replaced regularly, and the hydraulically actuated auxiliary mechanism automatically replaces the piston seals. The ASX eliminates this frequent, costly operation with easy-to-replace seal storage chambers, allowing for near-uninterrupted operation.
