The medical supplies industry has certain particularities compared to other industries. Driven by consumption upgrading, people not only pursue a higher quality of life, but also care more about their health. As a result, the global medical and pharmaceutical supplies sector is growing at a rapid pace, which is also stimulating the demand for automation.
01 Background
The customer is a leading manufacturer of blood purification equipment in China, which is engaged in the production of infusion equipment, medical equipment and consumables. At present, the company has more than 3,000 employees, and its products are sold to more than 70 countries. They attach great importance to quality control and production efficiency, and have been pioneers in industry automation.
Despite more than 10 years of automation experience, as custom orders increase, modifications to production vary – from large-scale deployment of automated equipment to single-station automation in which many manual workstations on the production line are replaced. As a result, the engineering department wanted to get the job done with equipment that could be deployed quickly and easily without changing the layout of the existing production line.
02 Challenge
In addition, the demand for medical products has surged in the past two years, and the production line has basically remained at full capacity. Therefore, as the retrofit process progressed, the production department wanted to introduce equipment with minimal downtime to ensure that normal production was carried out as scheduled.
In this case, customers and integrators consider using cobots for this task – and due to their familiarity with the products, customers believe that cobots are more flexible, space-saving, and easier to program than traditional industrial robots. After an on-site evaluation, Elite recommended that the customer first deploy a cobot for dialysis equipment handling.
Dialysis equipment is made of precision parts and should not damage the surface during handling. With this in mind, Elite recommended a 6 kg cobot (EC66) with an integrated flexible gripper for use in soft robots to replace manual handling. This type of work may seem simple, but only a compact cobot can do it in a limited space without having to change the layout of an existing production line.
03Our solution
It is worth mentioning that the elite cobot is interactively programmed by a PC and a teaching box. With the characteristics of drag-and-drop teaching, the programming logic is very simple.
Therefore, compared to traditional industrial robots, commissioning only requires a limited amount of time. On-site installation and commissioning can be completed within 4 hours, and the robot is mounted on a workbench with rollers, which can easily push the robot to different stations for fast task changeover. Based on the customer's assessment, the initial application may replace a worker. With a salary of 7,000 yuan/month and a salary of 2 shifts a day, for example, the investment in a cobot may pay for itself within 12 months.
In the future, in addition to handling tasks, the customer plans to use cobots for one-to-many inspection applications.
