Honeywell Launches New Low GWP Refrigerants for the Supermarket Industry

Morris Plains, New Jersey, United States, February 14, 2022 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announces the launch of Solstice N71 (R-471A), an innovative low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant. The product is suitable for commercial and industrial refrigeration applications, optimized for supermarket and supermarket application scenarios, and can meet the needs of a wide range of supermarket and retail customers looking for low GWP solutions to make advance layout in response to changing regulatory requirements. The latest addition to Honeywell's proprietary low-GWP Solstice® family of solutions, the Solstice N71 is the first non-flammable and energy-efficient solution in the supermarket industry with a GWP of less than 150.

Compared to conventional R-404A refrigerants and CO2-based refrigeration systems, Solstice N71 offers superior environmental energy efficiency, enabling customers to meet their sustainability goals while using traditional equipment. According to Honeywell's modelling analysis, Solstice N71 significantly improves energy efficiency in medium-temperature applications, using R-404A refrigerant and CO2-based systems by more than 13% and 30%, respectively. The Solstice N71 is an ideal solution for medium-temperature freezing applications, providing end-users such as supermarkets and retailers, as well as equipment manufacturers, with more options to achieve sustainability goals in an eco-friendly and cost-effective manner.

The introduction of Solstice N71 will be a key part of the supermarket industry's compliance with new environmental standards, such as United States California and the European Union requiring new systems to have a GWP of no higher than 150. In addition, the United States EPA is considering implementing similar national regulatory requirements in 2024. These regulatory restrictions are based on the requirements of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol to phase down the use of HFCs. With the amendment coming into effect in China in September 2021, domestic industry users are also actively looking for reliable alternative solutions to reduce HFCs in phases, in line with China's "dual carbon" goals of achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

Solstice N71 expands Honeywell's Solstice® product line, which includes Solstice N40 refrigerant, which is currently the most widely used 404A alternative refrigerant in the global supermarket industry. Since its launch in 2015, the Solstice N40 has been successfully used in more than 60,000 supermarkets worldwide.
