Honeywell recently introduced Honeywell's liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) solution to enable the long-distance transportation of clean hydrogen. This cost-effective solution can help meet the growing demand for hydrogen use across a wide range of industries, while existing refining and transportation facilities can be leveraged.
Hydrogen is expected to be an important means of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, but under standard conditions, hydrogen is a low-density, flammable gas and cannot be transported efficiently in its gaseous form. Existing hydrogen transportation solutions consist mainly of liquefied hydrogen and chemical carriers (e.g. ammonia), which often require additional facilities to load. Honeywell UOP's LOHC solution leverages existing refinery facilities to manufacture and transport carriers.
In Honeywell's LOHC solution, hydrogen is chemically synthesized into a convenient liquid carrier compatible with existing facilities through Honeywell's UOP toluene saturation process, which is then transported in the same manner as gasoline or similar hydrocarbons. Once the carrier reaches its destination, hydrogen is recovered from the carrier through Honeywell's UOP methylcyclohexane dehydrogenation process. Existing idle refining assets can be retrofitted to release hydrogen from liquid carriers for a variety of commercial and industrial applications. Honeywell LOHC solutions use vectors that are easy to obtain and require less supplementation.
