In modern society, the demand for industrial robots in all walks of life is constantly increasing. According to statistics from the Japan Robot Industry Association, orders from January to March 2021 increased by 43.2% compared with the same period last year, and production increased by 22.1% compared with the same period last year, both of which were significantly higher, and the figures for the quarter also hit a record high. The combination of a shrinking workforce, an aging population, changing consumer behaviour, and the new situation brought about by the pandemic has led to robots and automation beginning to penetrate society at an unprecedented rate.
In this issue, we will introduce to you how Kawasaki Robotics deals with these problems through the case of Florida Horticultural Materials Company in United States, and successfully helps practitioners free themselves from heavy manual labor and complete the automated loading process.
The case of Florida Gardening Materials, United States
Due to the pandemic, people are spending more time at home, making "gardening" a new trend. To this end, the company intends to increase production and sales.
Its products are wood chips used to cover foliage plants and yard soil, which are used in horticultural operations known as "covering" to cover up the soil, prevent overgrown weeds and dry soil, and help to maintain the right temperature of the soil.
Customer Requirement 1: Ensure Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction The loading operation usually requires two workers to complete, if the robot can be used, it will save labor to a large extent, but add the machine together, but also pay attention to reducing the expenditure of electricity bills.
Customer Demand 2: Can easily cope with the increased demand during busy periods As the occupation continues to rise, there is a need to increase production and sales on the one hand, and the problem of manual production is unacceptable on the other. In addition, the pallets used to hold product bags are 2.4 m high, making manual palletizing at high places very dangerous.
In the peak season of early spring, the demand may be completed and the output will double, if the automatic production line is used, it is necessary to ensure that the shipment can bear the added demand.
Kawasaki robot handling scheme
According to the various problems existing in the actual loading process, Kawasaki Robotics technicians combined the high-speed palletizing robot produced by Heavy Industry with the automatic palletizing system to complete the fully automated palletizing process.
The treatment scheme is as follows:
Through the power regeneration function, the power loss is reduced. Kawasaki Heavy Industries' next-generation "CP Series" palletizer is equipped with an electric regenerative function in addition to its strong and fast transfer capabilities. Equipped with a "small energy-saving controller" that can use the deceleration energy during operation as a "small energy-saving controller" that can be used for power recovery and reuse, reducing power consumption by 30-40%.
Kawasaki high-speed palletizing robot combined with automatic palletizing system. First of all, prepare "container conveyor belts" and "fixed-speed conveyor belts"; The robot then sorts them according to the pattern set in the program and stacks them in a dedicated loading box. The height of the box can be adjusted to about 1.8 meters or 3.6 meters, and it can be raised to the top level after half of the stacking, filling the remaining space of the box.
With a capacity of up to 22 bags per minute, the system can easily move 9,000 bags in 9 hours at an average loading speed of 18 bags per minute, and the loading capacity of 18 bags per minute is equivalent to the work capacity of two workers. As long as there are workers in charge, the palletizing robot can work continuously for 24 hours, which not only frees workers from heavy and repetitive work, but also avoids the risks caused by working at height.
In some occupations, practitioners are required to carry out heavy manual labor to complete some loading operations, and in this process, there are often problems such as "it is difficult to correctly load lightweight, large and slippery products onto regular pallets", "high-intensity manual labor is repeated for a long time", "high-altitude work poses danger to employees", "the work is deep and single, and the mobility of employees is large", and these problems need to be handled by robots.
Kawasaki [CP Series] high-speed palletizing robot
In this example, the Kawasaki CP Series high-speed palletizing robot is used, and the vertical multi-joint robot is used to target boxes and bags in the logistics industry. The product formation is composed of "CP180L", "CP300L", "CP500L" and "CP700L". In addition to the ability to quickly transfer, the range of operation is also very wide, and it supports a small energy-saving controller with renewable energy function.
Robots silently finish the work that "people don't want to do" and "people can't do", and people are also working the jobs that "robots can't do". In the future, Kawasaki Robotics will continue to develop new robots to promote flexible collaboration between humans and robots in their respective fields, work more efficiently and healthily, and create more value for customers and society.
