Japan's SMC announced on April 23 that its consolidated net profit for fiscal 2020 (ending March 2021) increased by 10% year-on-year to 121 billion yen. SMC's operating income increased 5% to 551.5 billion yen. This is an increase of 26.5 billion yen from the previous forecast. In China, sales to a wide range of industries, including semiconductors, automobiles, and machine tools, increased. Operating profit increased by 4% to 152.5 billion yen. This is an increase of 11.5 billion yen from the previous forecast. Operating margin remained at a high level of 28 percent.
In the factory automation equipment industry, the performance improvement brought about by the recovery of equipment investment tends to be obvious. Yaskawa Electric's financial results for fiscal year 2020 (ending February 2021) showed a 22% year-on-year increase in consolidated net income to 18.9 billion yen. The recent quarterly order intake is strong, and net profit is expected to increase by nearly 7% in fiscal 2021.
According to the Japan Machine Builders Association, machine tool orders rose 65% year-on-year to 127.8 billion yen in March, the highest level in two years. China has been actively promoting investment in semiconductors, electric vehicles and infrastructure, and orders from China have increased by 3.3 times.
