There is already a serious shortage of human resources in nursing care facilities, and reducing the burden on nursing care workers has become an important social issue. In this situation, there is a growing demand for power suits that can assist in bodily functions. It is estimated that the market size of power apparel is expected to reach 12 billion yen, and it will grow more than fivefold in the next five years.

Actuators for joint drives are an indispensable part of power suits. The actuator consists of a reducer that controls the body and a motor that generates driving force, and when installed in the human body, it can combine the actions of the human body to exert a large amount of power, thereby reducing the burden on the waist and legs.
Ultra-Flat Actuators "FLEXWAVE" × "Axial Flux Motor"
The current market is 60-3 million yen. The installation position of the actuator varies depending on the model, and most of them are mounted on the waist and knees, and two shafts or so are required. The premium model has more than four axes.

The "deformable gear" structure enables seamless control and thinning.

The principle of the drive component is that if a large force is required, the actuator becomes larger and thicker. However, at the care site, narrow passages or doors need to be walked through, and extra care needs to be taken to avoid injuring the user. Therefore, power take-in actuators need to be thin and compact.

The "FLEXWAVE" reducer, which has been supplied by Japan Electronics Shinpo since 2015, is a thin reducer that meets the needs of this nursing care site. Even the mid-size model for the waist is only 20mm thick compared to the diameter of 90 mm. In addition, in order to achieve the correct movement of the nursing staff, the actuator needs to be controlled very precisely. This is where the issue arises, namely the backlash (gap) between gears and gears. Although the FLEXWAVE uses a combination of external and internal gears, an elastomeric bearing is installed on the inner side that transforms into an oval shape. In addition, by using thin steel with high ductility for the external gear and deforming it with the bearing, it is possible to achieve low backlash by meshing it with the internal gear as a design. The degree of freedom of the gear ratio is thus also improved and seamless control of the 50 to 120 differences is achieved.

By combining it with a new motor, it achieves a thin profile and high power density.

On the other hand, the Axial Flat Motor (AFM) for ultra-flat actuators is a motor structure developed by Japan's Taiwan Motor Basic Technology Research Institute, which has attracted much attention in recent years. In order to ensure torque, the conventional Radial Flux Motor (RFM) has the advantage of increasing the diameter to obtain torque, while the AFM has the advantage of increasing the diameter to obtain torque.

AFM can obtain torque by increasing the diameter without vertical lengthening.

Therefore, when the output is up to 170W, its thickness is about 21mm.

Taking advantage of the synergies within the group, Japan Denco Shinho planned and designed an actuator that combines FLEXWAVE and AFM. The thickness is 41.5 mm relative to the above diameter of 90 mm. A very flat and lightweight actuator has been realized. We have launched three types of products with different output power and size, and we can meet the needs of various power suit applications according to the part of use and the nature of work.

Japan Den's actuators from Shinho far surpass other companies' products in terms of power density (relative to a certain mass of power).

In addition to power suits, we are currently considering applying them to personal mobility vehicles, including electric wheelchairs. In addition, it can also be used in production equipment such as SCARA robots and articulated robots that move autonomously. In the streets, in the family, the society that lives with robots is not far away from us. In the future, the demand for miniaturized and high-power actuators will grow rapidly.
