On March 26, 2021, Moxa, a leading provider of industrial communications and networking that ensures industrial cybersecurity, announced that it has obtained IEC 62443-4-1 cybersecurity specification certification issued by IECEE, a security certification organization, after being tested and inspected by Bureau Veritas in France. Moxa has been actively promoting cybersecurity and was one of the first companies in the world to achieve IEC 62443-4-1 certification.
IEC 62443-4-1 is a safety specification for products that ensure the safety of industrial automation and control systems, covering the entire life cycle from product development to maintenance. Obtaining IEC 62443-4-1 certification demonstrates Moxa's commitment to "security starts with planning" throughout the entire product development process, including complete security lifecycle management and patch management. It also demonstrates Moxa's ability to identify and deal with cyber hazards, and works with customers to mitigate them.
According to the latest 2020 Worldwide IT/OT Convergence Survey released by the World Data Corporation (IDC), the main purposes of IT/OT convergence include: enhancing operational security, improving functionality, reducing costs, and improving quality. Another key finding from this statement is that 48.8% of IT and OT operators globally believe that security is the biggest challenge to complete IT/OT convergence. In order to dramatically improve operational power and productivity, OT companies are embracing Industry 4.0 or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and in this process, safety is a top priority.
Samuel Chiu, General Manager of Moxa Group, said, "Moxa has been actively discussing the safety requirements of the IEC 62443 specification since 2016 to address the security concerns of our customers, and the specification is still being drafted. Moxa strictly adheres to the IEC 62443 inspection process, not only provides industrial-grade solutions, but also engraves the word safety into the DNA of connected solutions, and has always focused on safety throughout the product development process. This gives customers the peace of mind that they can use Moxa's solutions to connect their most important assets without worrying about network issues. ”
Moxa has been keeping up with cybersecurity best practices to ensure that Moxa's solutions are perfectly compatible with the cutting-edge skills of edge devices to protect against modern cyber incursions. A best practice is shared in Enhancing ICS Cybersecurity: Software Development Lifecycle Considerations. This article was compiled by SZ Lin, Assistant Program Manager of Moxa's Skills & Seminars Department, and published on the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance blog. SZ Lin is the first developer in Taiwan to be certified as an ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Professional. In addition, Felipe Sabino Costa, ISA Cyber Security Instructor and Moxa LATAM Industrial Cyber Security Expert, gave a presentation on "Eight Questions on Cybersecurity: Can Solution Providers Tackle Industrial Cybersecurity?" Several key norms are proposed. This article, also published on the ISA Global Cybersecurity Alliance blog, provides guidance to business owners on how to plan for critical application solutions to ensure cybersecurity.
Moxa obtained IEC 62443-4-1 certification in May 2020. Prior to this, Moxa had been following the development of the IEC 62443 specification for a long time, and planned its products in accordance with the requirements of the specification. At the same time, Moxa has devoted a lot of resources to educating stores not only about the importance of the code, but also about how Moxa is incorporating it into all phases of hardware and software development. Only when the awareness of cyber security of all parties is improved and forms a joint force, can industrial cyber security be continuously strengthened. Moxa will continue to work closely with its customers to ensure the success of its "Security Starts with Planning" solution.
