The STEP 7-Micro/WIN SMART software does not provide a library of Modbus ASCII communication modes. If the S7-200 SMART CPU is used for Modbus ASCII communication, it needs to be programmed by the user using the free port communication mode.

3.How does the S7-200 SMART CPU, as a Modbus RTU master, access the Modbus Hold Register with a address range greater than 49999?
Typically the Modbus protocol holds registers in the range of 40001 to 49999, which is sufficient for most applications, but some Modbus slaves hold registers outside of that range. The Modbus RTU master protocol library supports holding register addresses ranging from (40001 to 49999) or (400001 to 465536). If the Modbus slave address range is 400001 – 465536, simply assign the Addr parameter a value, such as 416768, when the MBUS_MSG subroutine is called.
4.Why does the S7-200 SMART CPU have a 6# error code when the MBUS_MSG command is called multiple times as a Modbus RTU master?
1. Only one MBUS_MSG instruction can be active at the same time, if more than one MBUS_MSG instruction is activated, the first MBUS_MSG instruction will be executed, and all subsequent MBUS_MSG instructions will be aborted with a 6# error code. The execution of multiple MBUS_MSG instructions requires round-robin.

When the S7-200 SMART CPU is the master of Modbus RTU, when the slave fails or the communication line is disconnected, the master will try to send multiple request packets, resulting in a long communication time. How to reduce the number of retransmissions on the master site to improve communication efficiency?
When the MBUS_MSG command is activated, a Modbus request packet frame will be sent, and if the master does not receive a reply from the slave within the time interval defined by the Timeout parameter, the Modbus RTU master protocol library will send two more Modbus request packet frames by default. The Done completion bit of the MBUS_MSG command is set to 1 only after the last request packet frame is sent, but no reply has been received after the time interval defined by the Timeout parameter. Change the value of the mModbusRetries variable from 2 to 0 to cancel the number of retries of the Modbus request packet frame. The absolute address of the mModbusRetries variable can be obtained by querying the symbol table of the Modbus RTU master protocol library, as shown in Figure 1.
