PC (personal computer) is derived from IBM's first desktop computer type, PC, in 1978, which is a personal computer that can run independently and perform specific functions. Personal computers do not need to share resources such as processing, disks, and printers from other computers to work independently. Nowadays, the term personal computer refers to all personal computers, such as desktop computers, laptops, etc.

A good computer system consists of two parts, namely the hardware system and the software system. The hardware consists of CPU, motherboard, hard disk, memory, graphics card, optical drive, floppy drive, mouse, keyboard, chassis, power supply, monitor and other components. Software includes: operating system (WINDOWS 7, UNIX, LINUX, OS, etc.) and applications such as (office2007, photoshop, CAD, PPS, QQ, etc.)

The best environment for using PCs is at home and in the office, and in principle, it is limited to personal use. The PC is required to be away from water sources, dust and vibration, and the anti-electromagnetic interference can be poor.

IPC (Industrial Personal Computer) is a kind of industrial computer that is enhanced and ruggedized according to the PC bus, which can be used as an industrial controller to run reliably in the industrial environment. Its main components are industrial chassis, passive base plate and various boards that can be pierced into it, such as CPU cards, I/O cards, etc., and adopt all-steel chassis, machine card strip filter, double positive pressure fan, fanless and other planning and EMC skills to deal with electromagnetic interference, sensation, dust, high/low temperature and other problems in the industrial site.

Compared with the PC, the IPC industrial computer has the following characteristics: (1) reliability, IPC has the ability to quickly diagnose and maintain dust, smoke, high/low temperature, humidity, sensation, corrosion, and its MTTF is more than 100,000 hours, while the MTTF of the general PC is only 10,000-15,000 hours. (2) Real-time, IPC carries out real-time online detection and control of the industrial production process, gives rapid response to changes in operating conditions, collects and outputs conditioning in a timely manner (the watchdog function is not possessed by the general PC), and self-reset in distress to ensure the normal operation of the system. (3) Expandability, IPC has a strong input and output function because of the base board + CPU card structure, and can expand up to 20 boards, which can be connected with various peripherals and boards on the industrial site, such as road controllers, video surveillance systems, vehicle detectors, etc., to complete various tasks. (4) Compatibility, can use ISA and PCI and other resources together, and support a variety of operating systems, multi-language assembly, multi-task operation system.

From the above introduction to the characteristics of PC and IPC, it can be concluded that the difference between PC and IPC is that IPC fully considers environmental factors such as circuit maintenance, anti-interference ability, shell protection ability, operating temperature, and anti-sensation impact ability in circuit planning and structure planning, and the application range is more and more extensive. Because of the reliable performance and abundant software of IPC, its application market will be more and more broad in the future. At present, IPC has been widely used in communications, industrial automation, road and bridge tolls, medical care, environmental protection, finance, transportation, electric power, military industry and all aspects of people's production and life.
