Each robot requires preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance and consistency on the production line. When the robot is not regularly inspected for preventive maintenance, it can lead to damage or malfunction of parts, which can lead to production sluggishness or even downtime. Proper maintenance of a robot can extend its lifespan by years or even decades, and regular preventive maintenance can extend the life of a robot exponentially.

Different robotics companies give different preventive maintenance moments. Fanuc Robotics, for example, has shown that preventive maintenance of industrial robots should be carried out every 3,850 hours or 12 months, which must not be negligent. KUKA Robotics, on the other hand, recommends more than 10,000 hours of preventive maintenance of the robot. It's important to look at the manual for your specific robot and then determine the best moment for maintenance.

Regardless of the length or duration of the maintenance advocated by the manual, organizing a maintenance program for the robot can prevent unplanned downtime due to mechanical problems. As once the downtime is made, it consumes expensive money. While it is possible to stop the robot for a short period of time with planned maintenance, it is a drop in the ocean compared to the time that can be lost in the event of an unplanned shutdown of the robot.

So, what does a routine preventative maintenance review include?

Back up controller memory

Supervise the robot regularly, looking at the robot, wires, and cables

Look at the brakes

See how compact the robot is

Listen for sounds, vibrations, and noise

Check the smooth joints of the robot according to the manual of the specific robot (if it has been smoothed, analyze the smoothness level)

Visual view of the teach pendant and controller cables

View cable connections, cooling fans, power supplies, safety equipment, and other operating equipment

Test and replace RAM and APC batteries if needed

If the robot needs to be repaired, the technician should report the problem so that the necessary repairs can be organized.
