Intel and Advantech jointly released the white paper on uCPE Integration DPDK and XDP to Promote 5G Network Optimization

Recently, Intel and Advantech jointly released the "uCPE Integration DPDK and XDP to Promote 5G Network Optimization White Paper" (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper"). Relying on Intel's deep accumulation in the processor field, Advantech's continuous innovation in 5G SD-WAN edge networks, and Fibocom's strong performance product strength of 5G modules, the white paper aims to promote the integration of uCPE hardware platform, 5G module, DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) and XDP (Fast Data Path) development technology, open up a fast path for DPDK and 5G network optimization, and promote the rapid deployment of SD-WAN.

　　Advantech's uCPE is equipped with Fibocom's high-performance 5G module, which enables SD-WAN to achieve high-speed, secure, and reliable cloud service access for enterprises on demand, establish a data transmission path between the edge and the cloud, and easily achieve zero-configuration networking through the 5G network without deploying a wired network, shortening the deployment period from weeks to a few hours, saving more than 40% of the operating cost of the WAN, simultaneously increasing the wireless communication rate by 30-40%, and greatly exerting the low latency and 5G multi-slicing capabilities of 5G. Taking remote monitoring and financial institution systems as an example, the headquarters and branches can quickly establish a secure and reliable encrypted link with the headquarters IDC and the cloud through uCPE hardware devices, helping the headquarters to remotely perform the operation and management of the branches.

The white paper points out that to fully exploit the 5G communication function of uCPE, a series of technical problems need to be solved, including the technical difficulties of DPDK still relying on the "slow path" based on the Linux kernel and XDP development. SD-WAN based on Intel master CPU can help explore edge computing applications, such as remote monitoring, financial services, smart retail, industrial manufacturing, and other vertical fields. In order to break through the development problems of DPDK, XDP and 5G networks, Intel, Advantech and Fibocom jointly built a uCPE 5G network optimization solution that integrates DPDK and XDP.

　　5G network coverage is rapidly expanding, bringing more high-speed experiences to edge computing and the Internet of Things. Simply converting 5G networks to Ethernet networks will not unleash the power of 5G for edge computing. At the heart of the solution proposed in this white paper is the use of new software technologies to optimize the packet transmission path between Intel processors and 5G modems at the hardware platform level. This proven approach removes performance barriers between 5G carrier networks, edge applications, and the DPDK ecosystem. uCPE with built-in 5G modules can bring differentiated 5G value experiences to end customers and ecosystem developers, and greatly promote new edge application innovation.
