Power management company Eaton has announced that its Twin Vortics Series (TVS) technology has proven to be an important component of hydrogen fuel cell components, thanks to which the TVS components provide air flow control, allowing them to operate at high efficiency.
The use of TVS in internal combustion engines is mainly in the transportation industry, while in traditional passenger cars, the supercharger installed in the Dodge Challenger engine uses Eaton's TVS twin-scroll screw technology. This component is connected by the engine belt and the crankshaft pulley to provide torque, which rotates the twin scroll screws to achieve the effect of forced air intake, so that the engine can improve combustion efficiency and thus improve power output.
For hydrogen fuel cells, precise control of the flow of air and hydrogen can improve the power conversion efficiency of fuel cells. The working principle is mainly to control the flow rate of the gas, so that hydrogen and oxygen pass through the fuel cell catalyst from the anode and cathode respectively, and separate into protons and electrons, and then let the protons react with oxygen through the exchange membrane to form water, and the flowing electrons generate electricity to drive the vehicle. In addition, the number of layers of the proton exchange membrane determines the amount of electricity produced by each layer, so the more layers there are, the more power is generated.
Eaton's TVS fuel cell fan is a flow rate controller based on the working principle described above, which is controlled by a DC motor with a working voltage between 300 and 450 volts, and the speed of the motor can be infinitely adjusted in the range of 14,000 rpm, so as to achieve the effect of controlling the flow rate.
Currently, Eaton is using TVS fans in some of its hydrogen-powered buses and plans to further increase production. TVS's planned deployment of fuel cells is aimed at developing the next generation of fuel cell cells that will have greater power density, pressure ratio, longer service life, and improved noise, vibration, and environmental tolerance.
