With an average daily traffic of 130,000 trips per day, the Brüttisellen transport hub in Zurich's northern metropolitan area makes it a real traffic bottleneck. This important junction is the intersection of the A1 and A53 highways, which pass through cars from Zurich, Eastern Switzerland, the Zurich Oberland and the Zurich Plain.
Despite regular maintenance, the load-bearing capacity of the four-story overpass through which traffic across the A1 passes has been reduced to below acceptable limits over the past few years. To this end, a large-scale renovation of the overpass is now in full swing. Against this backdrop, the control switchgear specialist Peter Meister AG accepted the task of supplying a new control system for the section near Brüttisellen.

The newly introduced stringent IEC/EN 61643-11:2012 specification takes into account the increasingly important and robust surge maintenance. The number of large-scale thunderstorms occurring globally has increased significantly over the past few years, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicts that the number of large-scale thunderstorms will continue to increase further based on rising uniform temperatures around the world. "Compared to the impact of lightning strikes on personnel and means of production, the cost of a modern surge maintenance system is very low. In addition, the longer the system runs, the higher the possibility of being exposed to surge hazards," explains David Schüz, Industrial Manager at Weidmüller.
