Introduction: Switching isolators supply power to proximity sensors in hazardous areas, receive proportional current, convert the input signal into a digital output signal, and transmit the switching signal to a control device such as a DCS or PLC. A switching isolator consists of three main components: a power supply, a transistor switching amplifier, and an output stage. Galvanic isolation separates the input, output, and power circuits. The isolator input stage is designed according to DIN EN60947 (NAMUR). This means that the residual voltage during normal operation is about 8 VDC and the short-circuit current is about 8 mA. The switching point is typically between 1.2-2.1 mA. Many Pepperl+Fuchs isolators offer optional lead break and short circuit monitoring (activated by slide switches) for hazardous area circuits. These isolators have three outputs that can be switched by mode of operation: relay, active transistor, and passive transistor output.
