Thermal resistance should have a technical standard documented, and if it is not available, it is necessary to consult the manufacturer. Basically, the thermal resistance and θja between the chip (junction) and the surrounding area (Ambient) are used. Although some ICs can provide the thermal resistance θjc to the housing, it is still necessary to find the thermal resistance to the θja stop. Finally, there is the ambient temperature, which can be estimated based on the additional value of the whole machine, such as 50°C. If the requirements are high, it is necessary to conduct actual measurements.

The idea is to find the heat of the IC chip based on the power loss and thermal resistance, and then add the surrounding temperature to find the temperature of the chip, and to check whether the calculated Tj (chip temperature) does not have Tjmax (the maximum additional chip temperature). If Tjmax has been exceeded, either of the conditions must be changed. As explained in the preceding paragraph, not all of them can be used as standard, and they are limited depending on the output input voltage, output current, and ambient temperature.

Generally speaking, there should not be many cases where the input voltage or output voltage can be changed beyond the extra. It may be possible to reduce the load current (output current) as a way to deal with this. In this case, the device that receives the power supply must choose the device that consumes as little current as possible. Other possible ways to reduce the ambient temperature are to reduce the ambient temperature. For example, it is possible to change from natural convection air cooling to fan cooling, improve cooling capabilities if there is an electric fan, and evaluate convection from scratch. In addition, although there are ways to reduce thermal resistance and hair generation by installing a heat sink in a linear voltage regulator, the cost and size of the heat sink must be a big discussion.
