(1) Large cache technology
The data center switch has changed the outbound port cache mode of the traditional switch, and adopts a distributed cache architecture, which is much larger than that of ordinary switches, and the cache capacity can reach more than 1G, while the general switch can only reach 2-4M. For each port, the burst traffic caching capacity reaches 200ms under the condition of 10 Gigabit full line speed, so that in the case of burst traffic, the large cache can still ensure zero packet loss for network forwarding, which is just suitable for the characteristics of large server volume and large burst traffic in the data center.
(2) High-capacity equipment
The network traffic of the data center has the characteristics of high-density application scheduling and surge burst caching, while ordinary switches cannot identify and control services for the purpose of interconnection, cannot achieve fast response and zero packet loss in the case of large services, and cannot ensure service continuity, and the reliability of the system mainly depends on the reliability of equipment.
Therefore, ordinary switches cannot meet the needs of data centers, data center switches need to have high-capacity forwarding characteristics, data in China and West exchanges must support high-density 10 Gigabit boards, that is, 48 10 Gigabit boards, in order to make 48 10 Gigabit boards can be forwarded, data center switches can only use CLOS distributed switching architecture. In addition, with the popularization of 40G and 100G, 8-port 40G boards and 4-port 100G boards are gradually commercialized, and 40G and 100G data center switch boards have already appeared in the market to meet the needs of high-density applications in data centers.
(3) Virtualization technology
The network equipment of the data center needs to have the characteristics of high management and high security and reliability, so the switch of the data center also needs to support virtualization, virtualization is to transform material resources into logically manageable resources to break the barriers between physical structures.
Through virtualization technology, multiple network devices can be managed in a unified manner, and services on one device can be completely isolated, which can reduce data center management costs by 40% and increase IT utilization by about 25%.
(4) TRILL TECHNOLOGY
In terms of building a Layer 2 network, the original standard of the data center is the FTP protocol, but its inherent defects are: STP works through port blocking, redundant links do not forward data, resulting in a good concubine of broadband resources, STP has only one spanning tree on the entire network, and data packets can only be reached through the root bridge relay, which affects the forwarding efficiency of the entire network.
Therefore, STP will no longer be suitable for the expansion of ultra-large data centers, TRILL is precisely because of these defects of STP, as a technology born of data center applications, TRILL protocol effectively combines Layer 2 configuration and flexibility with Layer 3 integration and scale, and the large Layer 2 does not need to be configured, and the whole network can be forwarded without loop. TRILL technology is a basic feature of Layer 2 of data center switches, which is not available in ordinary switches.
(5) FCOE technology
Traditional data centers often have a data network and a storage network, and the new generation of data center network convergence is becoming more and more obvious, the emergence of FCOE technology makes network convergence possible, FCOE is the storage network data frame encapsulated in the Ethernet frame for forwarding technology. This convergence technology must be realized on the switches in the data center, which are generally not available in ordinary switches.
