Solar-powered smart parking meters boost energy-saving deployments
A smart city solution provider in Taiwan, China, uses smart road technology to help several cities solve infrastructure and management problems. Based on past experience, the digitalization of urban infrastructure requires long-term planning and adequate budgeting, and is expensive and time-consuming to build.

One-stop design service saves the workload of software and hardware integration
Smart parking meters use outdoor unattended solutions, which require a rugged design and sufficient computing power to withstand outdoor temperature changes and operate reliably to detect parking space occupancy. At the same time, some parking meters – especially solar meters – have specific power requirements and only support low-energy devices.

The project selection is based on NXP i. MX8M SOC Advantech ROM-5721 SMARC2.1 Compact PC. The ROM-5721's compact size (82x50 mm) fits into the compact design of a parking meter. Its heterogeneous processing architecture, configured with up to four ARM Cortex-A53 cores and one Cortex M4 processor, combined with Advantech's real-time operating system (RTOS) design services, enables the parking meter to make efficient use of power management and computing resources.
As a result, parking meters can quickly switch between deep sleep, sleep, and operating modes, and run multiple peripherals and software applications simultaneously. Typically, the parking meter CPU is in deep sleep mode, monitored by its Cortex-M4 processor for millimeter-wave radar. Only when the radar detects movement, the CPU wakes up to support key functions such as contactless payments and license plate recognition. In addition, the project uses an e-ink screen to replace the conventional LCD/LED display, which is more energy-efficient.
In addition, Advantech's flexible modular hardware and software design, such as ready-to-use embedded Linux (yocto) for Cortex-A53, allows solution providers to focus on their own application development, speeding up the overall project schedule. Advantech's AIM-Linux includes an embedded Linux Board Support Package (BSP) based on the Long-Term Support (LTS) version, as well as peripheral drivers to meet different software needs.
