The Bremen Digital Hub Industry (DHI) was officially established on July 5, 2022, with the purpose of digital ecological innovation. The government of the state of Bremen, Germany, the University of Bremen, automation specialist Lenz in Hamelin, Germany, and its subsidiary encoway GmbH have worked together to create this space for ideas and experiments focused on the industrial sector. In just one and a half years, this unique innovation ecosystem is already located in the science and technology park near the University of Bremen. The center is dedicated to the application of digital technologies and, more importantly, the sharing of digital technologies and extensive cooperation in the field of digitalization. Funded by the canton of Bremen, DHI aims to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the industrial sector with much-needed digital transformation and provide a testing ground for innovations and new business models.
Small and medium-sized industrial enterprises face significant challenges in an increasingly volatile environment. In addition to running their day-to-day business, they must also focus on the future of business development and innovation. Digitalization offers enormous potential.
How can enterprises quickly and autonomously implement digital transformation in a way that creates their own value without sufficient digital expertise and with very limited resources?
The answer is that businesses don't need to face these challenges "alone". Explaining the rationale behind the project, Wendler, CEO of the Lenze Group, said: "We live in a world where technology and organisational structures are becoming more and more complex. The basic concept of DHI is to provide a place for exchange between companies and universities in the field of research. On the one hand, companies such as Lenze can provide their industry expertise and present their digitalization challenges and current issues in order to provide specific targets for research projects. On the other hand, companies can also benefit from these research results and translate them into new digital products, services, or business models.
In her welcome speech, Kristina Vogt, Minister for Economy, Labour and European Affairs of Bremen, underlined the importance of DHI for the canton of Bremen: "With these demand-based developments, medium-sized companies and start-ups will receive solid support on their path to digitalization. DHI will continue to make Bremen more attractive and create new ones while protecting existing ones. ”
The DHI core area in the new Neos building contains approximately 16,000 square meters of offices, laboratories and event space, with collaborative creation spaces, diverse laboratory areas, and an Open Innovation Lab for large-scale event spaces. Here, industrial companies can cooperate with other companies, university researchers or innovative companies, as well as "digital" talents. In an era of shortage of skilled workers, DHI's proximity to the University of Bremen makes it easy for companies to exchange ideas with a wide range of talents.
