Background:

Reducing downtime saves companies from many headaches

A material handling company uses a large, automated transfer system to transport a variety of parts between multiple processing stations. Processing stations are often exposed to high temperatures.

Issue:

Occasionally, automated tray loaders would load trays into the wrong transfer lane. Incorrectly loaded trays can eventually bring the line to a standstill, triggering downtime, machine damage, and a potential hazard for operators.

Incorrectly loaded trays can be derailed on either side of the transfer channel. Viewed from the side of the conveyor system, the derailed tray appears too far or too close to the edge of the conveyor. Properly loaded pans are kept at a precise distance from the edges.

In addition, the pan is sintered at the processing station, resulting in a slight color

Solution:

KEYENCE's distance-based GV series sensors perform well when it comes to detecting incorrectly loaded trays. With the GV Series installed, it can be viewed from the side as each tray passes through the conveyor. Properly placed trays pass at a precise distance from the sensor head, while incorrectly loaded trays pass too close or too far from the conveyor. When the GV is set to zone mode, it reliably detects both problem conditions and alerts the operator before an incorrectly loaded tray can bring the line to a standstill.

As a side note, the GV Series' range-based sensing capabilities overcome a common sensing problem – colored targets. Discoloration of the pan due to repeated heating and cooling is no longer a problem.

Outcome:

The GV series solves application problems and eliminates customer headaches. Without the GV series, this application problem would have required a "measure" type solution, which would have been much more expensive.
