The EX-RSS16 is Schmersal's first RFID-based safety sensor designed in accordance with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and can be used in Zone 2 (Gas EX, Category 3G) and Zone 22 (Dust EX, Category 3D). This means that EX-RSS16 combines two important features for system safety: functional safety in accordance with ISO 13849 and explosion protection. At the same time, the sensor is available in explosion-proof classes Ex ec and Ex tc, which cover explosion-proof functions without the need for additional energy restraint devices.
Wear-free safety sensors are ideal for position monitoring of a wide range of safety devices, including doors, machine axes or other rotary, sideways or movable safety devices. Three different operating directions allow for sensitive selection of mounting positions.
The EX-RSS16 is available with or without latching. For example, a variant with a magnetic lock ensures that the door can be kept closed even in the absence of voltage. Thanks to the built-in RFID technology, the EX-RSS16 supports individual coding variants that meet the high coding level of ISO 14119 and thus provide excellent tamper-proof maintenance.
The EX-RSS16 safety sensor can be selected with a diagnostic output or an SD interface (serial diagnostic diagnosis). Up to 31 safety switches with serial diagnosis can be connected in series. As a result, diagnostic data from the individual serialized devices can be transmitted to the controller, e.g. via the SD gateway and fieldbus (e.g. PROFIBUS), such as condition data or error messages. This means being able to resolve issues faster. Advanced diagnostic data supports predictive maintenance and helps prevent machine downtime. The PLC is able to announce control commands to the devices connected in series.
The new explosion-proof versions for gas and dust applications significantly expand the potential applications of RFID security sensors, and the EX-RSS16 is suitable for many industrial sectors where explosion-proof requirements need to be met. Due to its functionality and cost-effectiveness, the sensor was in high demand as soon as it was introduced. Marlies Gerstkämper-Oevermann, Product Manager of the Schmersal Group, says.
