Power-to-X technology provides energy on demand
A key element of the concept of an all-electric society is the generation of electricity from renewable sources, and Power-to-X technology has been born.
In solar, wind, and hydroelectric power plants, there is a surplus of electricity when there is too much sunlight, wind, or hydropower. This excess electricity can be used to produce fuels (power-to-fuel), hydrogen and methane (power-to-gas), ammonia and methanol (power-to-liquid fuels), and other chemicals. In the context of an all-electric society, some of the resulting substances can also be reused to generate electricity. As a result, they act as energy storage substances to cushion fluctuations in these renewable energies and ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Power-to-X technologies like these will enable industry coupling to connect the power, heating, gas, and mobility sectors.

1 Future-proof automation system
In order for the Power-to-X system to meet the requirements of future applications, new automation designs need to be integrated. In the context of digital transformation, the openness of automation design and the use of new industry standards play an important role.
The PLCnext Technology ecosystem is the basis for open, standardized digital solutions. The system implements concepts such as Open Process Automation (OPA) and integrates modular system components into larger systems via Module Type Packages (MTPs). MTP helps speed up system design, build, and commissioning.
PLCnext Technology also supports the NAMUR Open Architecture (NOA) concept. This makes it easy and safe to use production data, continuously optimize processes, and enable predictive maintenance. The PLCnext Technology open-source platform meets the needs of tomorrow's applications and is the basis for the automation transformation of systems under development today.
2 Control and monitor the electrolysis plant
We monitor, automate and digitize electrolysis operations with processes and systems. These include: water treatment, electrolyte treatment, gas and liquid storage tanks, and cooling systems. In addition, we are able to monitor and automate compressors. Phoenix Contact offers the necessary technologies and extensive experience in automating chemical plants to ensure high availability of electrolyzers and thus increase competitiveness.
In order to further reduce plant costs, it is necessary to comply with principles such as cost-oriented design, and this is also the case when increasing production capacity. In addition, digital transformation offers even more possibilities, such as the use of digital twins for process optimization and modernization. Digital transformation opens up new ways to improve the efficiency of electrolyzers and other systems in the Power-to-X industry.
3 Monitor the pipeline
In addition to pipelines for transporting a wide range of gases, the Power-to-X industry also requires piping systems for building supplies.
Phoenix Contact offers highly efficient leak detection systems for pipeline leaks that detect small leaks and precisely calculate their location. The monitoring solution is suitable for syngas pipelines, as well as for syngas and hydrogen pipelines.
4 Monitor the tank system
As part of the Power-to-X supply chain, more tank farms are being built. Tank farms are not just temporary storage sites for fuel cell hydrogen. The large tank farms at the industrial site will also provide hydrogen feedstock for power-to-gas and power-to-liquid fuel processes.
For efficient level control, we offer a wide range of products certified for SIL functional safety technology, intrinsically safe signal isolators and modular control systems. In addition to level control, an overflow protection device is installed, using a special valve circuit to prevent the tank from overflowing.
5 Control and monitoring of fuel cell and cogeneration plants
Today's combined heat and power plants can already use natural gas to generate electricity and heat. Of course, the natural gas used here can also be replaced by green fuels for the Power-to-X industry. This further makes this effective and efficient process more climate-friendly.
Another way to convert green energy into electricity is to use hydrogen fuel cells, a technology that is increasingly being used in vehicle technology and other applications.

01 New communication technology
New technologies such as 5G, APL, TSN and OPC UA together form the basic framework for future communication technologies. These new concepts will also be part of the new Power-to-X industry, as this is the only way to ensure that individual data points can be networked securely, easily, and quickly.

To meet stringent IT security requirements, it's not enough to simply install a firewall somewhere in your critical infrastructure. Customers need to set protection goals to minimize all types of cyber risks. These protection objectives are based on the established IEC 62443 standard "IT Security for Industrial Automation Solutions".
03 Functional Safety
Risk management is essential not only for environmental protection and personal safety, but also for system maintenance to ensure investment security. In addition to the Safety Integrity Level (SIL), the Performance Level (PL) also plays an important role in the application of automated safety systems. Distributed solutions such as SafetyBridge technology can be flexibly configured and are now used in a wide range of SIL3 applications. Such solutions can be easily integrated into the controller.
Safety controllers from Phoenix Contact are suitable for complex applications and can be integrated into Profisafe and Profinet networks. This makes it possible to implement safe shutdown, safe gas detection and other functional safety functions independent of the manufacturer. 04 Explosion-proof protection
Power-to-X applications involve the preparation, transportation, and storage of combustible gases, which poses a critical safety concern. If a gas leaks and no one notices it, an explosive or toxic atmosphere can form. In this case, the personnel must be warned using the appropriate sensors and gas alarm devices. In addition, it is not allowed to pass through such areas during transportation within the factory. To control the transport, we will connect the transport lighting system to the gas detector with suitable transmission technology.
