01. What is a linear voltage regulator?
A linear regulator uses a transistor or FET operating in its linear region to subtract the excess voltage from the input voltage of the application to produce a conditioned output voltage.
The voltage drop voltage is the minimum value of the difference between the input voltage and the output voltage required by the regulator to maintain the output voltage within 100mV above and above its rated value.
LDO (Low Dropout) regulators with positive output voltages generally use power transistors (also known as delivery devices) as PNPs. This transistor allows fullness, so the regulator can have a very low dropout voltage, generally around 200mV; In contrast, conventional linear regulators using NPN composite power transistors have a voltage drop of about 2V.
The negative output LDO uses the NPN as its delivery device, and behaves in a similar way to the PNP device with the positive output LDO.
02. What is a switching regulator?
Switching regulators use output stages that repeatedly switch between "on" and "off" states to generate an output voltage along with the energy storage components (capacitors and inductors).
It is adjusted by adjusting the switching punctuality according to the feedback sample of the output voltage.
In a fixed-frequency regulator, switching punctuality is conditioned by the pulse width of the switching voltage, which is known as PWM manipulation.
In gated oscillators or pulse regulators, the width and frequency of the switching pulses are always stable, but the "on" or "off" of the output switch is controlled by feedback.
Depending on the arrangement of the switches and energy storage components, the resulting output voltage can be greater or less than the input voltage, and multiple output voltages can be generated with a single regulator. In most cases, a pulse (buck) switching regulator converts a higher power supply than a linear regulator with the same input and output voltage requirements.
