As a device to control the start/stop of three-phase asynchronous motor, the soft starter is mainly used to effectively reduce the starting current and control the shutdown process. Its main working principle is to control the starting voltage by controlling the conduction angle of the thyristor on the main circuit. Since the starting voltage is approximately proportional to the starting current, the starting current can be reduced by adjusting the starting voltage.
The common motor starting methods mainly include: direct start, star delta start, auto-coupling step-down start, inverter start and soft start. When selecting a soft starter for a load, you should first consider whether the soft starter can meet the load operating conditions. For example, a soft starter cannot be selected for the working condition that requires motor speed control, because the soft starter does not have the function of speed regulation. For special loads, especially heavy loads with large starting torque/large acceleration torque/long starting time, whether the soft starter can be suitable for the load characteristics should also be fully considered.
When deciding to select a soft starter, the first thing you should do is determine the type of load. For conventional loads with small starting torques and starting times of less than 20 seconds (e.g. general fans/pumps), the standard soft starters of the Siemens 3RW30/40 series are available. For heavy loads with large starting torque/long starting time (e.g. crusher/hoist/roots blower, etc.), it is recommended to consider the Siemens high-performance soft starter series 3RW44.
Next, the soft starter should be selected according to the rated current/voltage of the motor, and the motor power is only used as a reference parameter, especially when the customer uses a domestic motor, please be sure to check the rated current to ensure sufficient margin.
In addition, parameters such as control voltage, grid frequency, on-site ambient temperature, ventilation and heat dissipation, altitude, and number of starts per hour should also be provided. For high-temperature/high-altitude/high-cranking applications, amplification should be considered.
If customers need special functions, such as protection functions/display functions/communication functions, they should check the characteristics of the different series of soft starters from Siemens.
