The thermistor changes its resistance with temperature. They do not amplify, correct, polarize, or generate signals. The thermistor temperature can change due to changes in the ambient temperature or by self-heating generated by the passage of electric current.
Most applications, such as temperature measurement, control, or copper wire compensation, require that the power dispersed in the thermistor be kept to a minimum to avoid imperceptible heating of the thermistor. Other applications are entirely dependent on the self-heating effect.
