More flexible, intelligent devices mean more complexity and, therefore, higher demands on controller performance. The new cabinet-mounted controller from Lenze is in line with this trend and has already made new technological breakthroughs. With its C500 series, Lenze achieves an unprecedented level of performance for controllers. Complementing the current c300 and 3200C models, Lenze's proven motion control technology can now also be used in even the most complex projects. As a result, they are comparable to solutions that are currently sufficient only for industrial PCs.

The cores of the c500 series are some of Intel's most powerful CPUs available today and are designed for highly compact designs. These processors redefine the performance limits of controllers, which means that this new family of controllers can easily meet the growing demands of Industry 4.0 for general controller tasks and motion applications.

For OEMs, the product will have the following advantages: for example, the c500 will eliminate the need for an industrial PC for some of the more complex projects that have not yet had a powerful enough controller to choose from, thus eliminating the need for extensive programming and connectivity. In addition, machine builders can leverage their know-how in a familiar environment and use intelligent standard software modules from the Lenze FAST application software toolbox. At the same time, existing programs and program modules that comply with the IEC61131-3 standard can continue to be used.

One example of this is the application of printing machines: when multi-axis synchronization is carried out, the printing machine requires high real-time performance and maximum precision. The new generation of controllers meets all of these needs – delivering excellent performance at all times, even for existing applications that are growing as part of Industry 4.0 and require higher computing power.

The c750 combines a programmable logic controller and an industrial PC into one. The controller covers a range of applications where Windows applications must be used. With the c750, Lenze can use the OpenSystem architecture to distribute computing power between two independent operating systems. The real-time Linux system is responsible for the control tasks, while the open Windows 10 IoT Enterprise system can be used for customized software applications.

Both systems run on the same physical processor core, which splits into two virtual cores, so two tasks can be processed in parallel. This is achieved by virtualizing the processor hierarchy integrated into the CPU, allowing for the direct allocation of available resources – not only the processor cores, but also the main memory and interfaces.

Some of the most common Windows applications include database applications, such as configuration management and data evaluation, with the help of AI and machine learning, in part. Image analysis routines for barcode readers and 2D/3D scanners or vision applications, including teaching applications for simple teach-in robots, rely on Windows. In addition, data exchange with the cloud is becoming increasingly important. The C750 cabinet-mounted controller pre-processes all the data and makes it cloud-compatible by compressing it.

Lenze has now developed a gateway for web services and a cloud-based X4 platform to integrate devices in smart factories into the cloud. It's an integrated, complete solution that is ready for immediate use and doesn't require any relevant expertise to get up and running. This makes it possible to easily and securely connect Lenze's next-generation controllers to web services, allowing users to observe device data and status from any web-enabled terminal.

In addition, some automation applications also require a Windows environment. In its compact package, the c750 combines the power of a PC with a controller, eliminating the need for a PC. This new controller product pushes the limits of performance for programmable logic controllers – the starting point for the transition to PC technology. As a result, Lenze allows its partners to continue to use PLC-based modules and components in more complex projects and to reduce costs as well as space requirements for control cabinets.
