Advantech assisted Pingtung Veterans in building the first large-scale closed-loop medication management hospital in Taiwan

Advantech, a major manufacturer of industrial Internet of Things, recently announced that it has assisted Pingtung Veterans General Hospital with an innovative medication management model of the Internet of Things, making it the first hospital in Taiwan to introduce Closed Loop Medication Administration (CLMA) on a large scale, realizing the digitalization of medication management in the medical industry.

　　Jiayin Li, Senior Business Manager of Advantech Medicine, pointed out that the drug dispensing process is regarded as one of the most common medical processes that go wrong, because there are many tedious human intervention processes involved in the delivery of drugs from hospital pharmacies to patients, and even if a perfect management system is created, there is no risk of potential omissions in manual inspections. Therefore, with the assistance of Internet of Things technology, closed-loop management can be truly implemented, which can not only improve the safety of medication, but also reduce the pressure of nursing staff to worry about mistakes.

Li Jiayin further explained that this time, Pingtung Veterans General Hospital used Advantech's AMiS closed-loop medication management solution, that is, RFID technology as the core and e-paper to automatically update information, stringing together every process of drug delivery from the pharmacy to the inpatient ward and then to the patient, and changing the original work of repeated checking by nurses to RFID recording and verification, so as to accurately pay attention to the flow of drugs in each link, so as to reduce the error rate and ensure the safety and correctness of dispensing and administration.

In other words, after the introduction of the smart medication solution, pharmacists only need to pair at the pharmacy through the RFID smart medicine box setting station, and put the drugs that each patient needs to take into the RFID smart medicine box according to the doctor's instructions, and then send the RFID smart medicine box from the hospital pharmacy to the nursing station on each floor through the UD smart medicine box transport vehicle.

Once the smart medicine box arrives at the nursing station, the nurse only needs to put the smart medicine box into the mobile smart medicine cart, and when the medication time is up, the nurse only needs to sense the patient's bracelet barcode, and the mobile smart medicine cart will automatically pop out of the patient medicine box to ensure the correct administration of medication. For controlled drugs, there are also lightweight smart medicine cabinets for drug management at nursing stations, and nurses must rely on card-level scanning of drug orders to open the medicine cabinet to use controlled drugs.

In addition, Advantech has developed iMedication, a smart medication management system that can be integrated with the hospital's HIS/NIS system, so that pharmacists can view doctor's orders and dispense medications accordingly. Nurses record bedside medication information here, and managers can pay attention to the flow of drugs here to ensure the correctness and immediacy of drug dispensing.

Advantech explained that Pingtung Rong is not only the first hospital in Taiwan to introduce large-scale closed-loop medication management, but also Advantech's first closed-loop medication management application in the world. In the future, this program will continue to be promoted to more medical centers, regional hospitals, and regional hospitals in Taiwan and around the world, hoping to promote Taiwan to become a model of intelligent medical care in the world.
