Almost half of the electricity produced in Germany is used in industry, with electronic drives using about two-thirds of this energy consumption.
When evaluating the use of energy, the entire drive system, including the frequency converters, motors, and gearboxes, needs to be considered, as the overall efficiency determines the amount of electrical energy required for a given process. The focus is usually on improving the efficiency of the motor, although even more energy can be saved by optimizing the drive for the operating process.

Most drives are unable to feed energy back to the power supply because this process is costly and in many cases unnecessary. If energy needs to be fed back to the power supply, an additional regeneration module must be connected to the tributary bus of one or more frequency converters. When the average regeneration power exceeds 5 kW, it is cost-effective to use a regeneration module.
