Fundamentals of Automation Systems – Introduction
Why sensors are so important to machines
To put it simply, machines work like humans. We perceive the world around us through our sensory organs, and machines detect their surroundings through different sensors, devices, and displacement measurement systems. The machine continuously receives signals and sends them to the control system via the network. The control system analyzes these signals into input signals and sends them as output signals to actuators, e.g. to valves, drives or SmartLights, which trigger an action that sets the machine in motion.
When you take an object in your hands, your vision checks the movement of your hands, while your sense of touch checks the force required for this, and if necessary, the muscles increase the pressure.
Relative to the machine level, for example, a photoelectric distance sensor and a pressure sensor in the gripper check the movements of the vacuum gripper and the robotic arm. Photoelectric sensors continuously determine their position, while pressure sensors ensure a reliable grip by monitoring the pressure of the vacuum cups, and the control system processes these sensor signals and forwards them to the actuator, which corrects them if necessary.
