Weather radar is a radar dedicated to atmospheric detection, mainly used for short-term weather forecasting and extreme weather warnings (such as typhoon and heavy rain warnings). The successful convening of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was due to the contribution of weather radar. A radar with a Lenze 940 servo drive and a Lenze servo motor is particularly worth mentioning. According to meteorological experts, in the middle of summer, if the precipitation clouds in Hebei drift to the Beijing area step by step, it will lead to precipitation weather in Beijing. In view of this characteristic, the Olympic Organizing Committee has specially "requisitioned" a number of weather radars to provide meteorological support for the Olympic Games. These weather radars with a keen sense of smell are deployed in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao and other places, providing detection data to the Olympic meteorological support department every few minutes. The "X-band dual-polarization" radar, which was entrusted with the important task, was deployed on Lingshan Mountain, northwest of Beijing, at an altitude of 1,800 meters. Although it is more than 80 kilometers away from Beijing, it monitors all the changes in the clouds over the city.
The night before the opening ceremony, with the help of key data such as the thickness, moving speed and reflective force intensity of the precipitation clouds collected by the "X-band dual-polarization" radar, the Olympic meteorological support department launched rockets at the precipitation clouds, intercepted the application of Lenze products moving in the direction of Beijing on the meteorological radar, and successfully rained down on the periphery of about 80 kilometers from Beijing, ensuring the smooth holding of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
