When it comes to position detection of machine tools, you usually think of using a grating scale to control the CNC spindle. This type of sensor principle is the most commonly used in modern machine tools and can even achieve sub-micron resolution. However, there are many other applications in metalworking that do not necessarily require such high-end and expensive measuring systems.
Loading and unloading of workpieces
In the highly automated process of loading and unloading workpieces, the reproducibility of the position of the axis of motion needs to be accurate to 100 millimeters, which is sufficient for reliable and precise transport of workpieces. The magnetic encoding system is the most cost-effective product in this application, with a lower price, easier installation and an overall competitive price compared to the encoder ruler. The system has both incremental and absolute output signals. Incremental signals are either quadrature or sinusoidal. Absolute outputs are used for industry-standard SSI and BISS interfaces. Today, IO-Link interfaces, which also comply with industry standards, are becoming more and more popular.
The non-contact and wear-free system has a long service life and can be calibrated with a certain amount of redundancy, which is particularly important in applications with shaft lengths of several meters.
Position detection in turntable applications
The use of CNC is usually monitored from 3 axes (X-, Y, Z-). Over the past few years, more and more solutions have appeared on the market in the 5 axes, which offer more flexibility in production and at the same time make the machine more efficient, as there is no need to manually orient the workpiece during machining.
Integrated modular systems such as turntables and turntables significantly improve the performance of machine tools. The compact design of the rotary magnetic encoder system meets the design requirements of this type of mechatronic modular system.
Another advantage of the rotary magnetic encoding principle is that it allows more space in the center of the bearing for media such as coolant, power and signal lines.
