No matter what the occasion, robots will always be the most eye-catching existence. Tesla plans to employ more than 10,000 people when the Gigafactory is fully operational, a goal that will require automation.
Tesla hired Er·ic Christensen, who has more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing automation at chipmaker AMD, to manage automation. Christensen is primarily responsible for the overall equipment layout and material flow in the plant, all of which involve robots. At present, there are three types of robots that assist workers in manufacturing machines.
The Adept Lynx can carry up to 60 kg and work for up to 19 hours, with the ability to charge autonomously
The first is the most common automated guided vehicles (AGVs), which rely on ground magnets or navigation beacons to move or change paths. Tesla has developed a heavy-duty version.
The second is the Autonomous Intelligent Vehicle (AIV) for material transportation. The AIVs used in Gigafactory are manufactured by Adept Technology, a high-tech manufacturer specializing in industrial automation in United States, called "Adept Lynx", which can carry a weight of 60 kg, work up to 19 hours, and can be charged independently.
Unlike AGVs or other robots, AIVs don't need to be fixed in a certain position or follow magnets or navigation beacons on the ground to move. It can move freely and autonomously through the factory using only a digital map, and the detection sensors ensure that it can safely avoid people and obstacles. Interestingly, Tesla also remodeled one of the AIVs to look like the R2-D2 from Star Wars.
