Intrinsically safe design, ATEX and IECEx certified
The Model 1551A/1552A stick standard thermometers are the choice in the field of industrial temperature calibration. Its accuracy and reproducibility reach ±0.05°C/year over the entire range, and it is battery-powered, portable, and rugged. It can be used not only as a temperature standard in the laboratory, but also in the industrial field to achieve accurate temperature measurement conveniently and reliably. The intrinsically safe design allows it to be used safely and reliably in environments where explosive gases are present. It has the following features:
Safety and environmental protection: Completely prevent the harm caused by the breakage of mercury thermometer to people and the environment
Accurate and reliable: The one-year accuracy index of the full scale is ±0.05°C
Data logging: 10,000 test data records with time stamps
Smart and practical: user-configurable temperature trend/stability indication
Two models are available: 1551: -50°C - 160°C, 1552: -80°C - 300°C
Usage time: 300 hours battery life, battery remaining power and low power indication, 3 ordinary AAA batteries, easy to replace
Intrinsically safe design: ATEX and IECEx compliant, safe and reliable for use in harsh environments
NVLAP certified, NIST traceable calibration
The thermometer probe and digital reading device are combined into a single unit
The stainless steel probe and digital readout device are fixed together and calibrated as a system. The accuracy metric is easy to understand because it includes the full range of uncertainty components, including a year-long drift. The large LCD display with backlight rotates 90 degrees for easy reading. A user-configurable steady/trend indication lets you know when the temperature has reached enough stability to record accurate measurements. The user-configurable auto-shut-off feature extends the typical life of the battery to 300 hours. The low battery indication and stop measurement function prevent erroneous measurement results due to low battery level. A simple three-point calibration function makes it easy to calibrate a "stick" thermometer accurately. The data logging function is optional and stores 10,000 time-stamped measurements to the internal memory.
Why Calibrate Process Temperature Sensors?
Temperature has a significant impact on the accuracy of volume measurements, and is required in manufacturing processes such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food or petrochemical industries, especially those regulated by government agencies for quality or storage and transportation. Since all temperature sensors drift over time, they need to be calibrated or verified regularly with a reliable reference thermometer. However, finding a standard thermometer with high accuracy, reproducibility, and robustness has always been a challenge.
What's wrong with my reference thermometer?
Industrial reference thermometers available on the market today, such as mercury thermometers (or "ASTM thermometers") and portable electronic thermometers, are relatively easy to use, but have their own problems. Mercury thermometers, despite their accuracy and reproducibility, are very fragile. Mercury splashing poses a potential danger to the environment and human health. Several states in the United States and many countries in the European Union have banned the use of mercury thermometers in the industrial sector. Some institutions have replaced mercury thermometers with more portable electronic thermometers, but have found that the RTD probes they use lack the reproducibility and reliability required for formal reference thermometers.
An alternative to mercury thermometers
Fluke "stick" thermometers are accurate, stable, and durable, making them an alternative to mercury thermometers and existing electronic thermometers. Thin-film RTD sensors combine the same features as other advanced reference thermometers designed by Fluke Calibration, but are more durable and less prone to drift. At the same time, there is no compromise in accuracy and reproducibility due to increased durability.
With mercury or other liquid thermometers, if the immersion depth or ambient temperature is significantly different from the immersion depth or temperature at the time of calibration, it may be necessary to apply corrections to the exposed portion of the mercury column, which is tedious but necessary to calculate accurate measurements. Fluke "stick" thermometers eliminate these cumbersome operations. The 1551A Ex sensor requires a small immersion depth of only seven centimeters (2.8 inches), and heat loss caused by conduction has little effect on the measured temperature. Some digital thermometers have a narrow ambient temperature range, and the measurement becomes inaccurate when their ambient temperature range is exceeded. Fluke "stick" thermometers do not have this drawback. It is able to maintain the accuracy of its measurements in the ambient temperature range of -10 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit). Combined with superior probe design and electronic features that facilitate accurate measurements, "stick" thermometers are far superior to other digital thermometers and are an excellent alternative to mercury thermometers. 1 To minimize sensor drift, the probe should always be protected from mechanical shock.
Top 5 reasons to replace mercury thermometers
Since "stick" thermometers do not contain mercury, they are not subject to the ban imposed by the government. Government agencies around the world have banned or are seeking to ban the use and transportation of industrial mercury thermometers, and this trend seems to be growing.
The stainless steel probe sheath of a "stick" thermometer is more robust than the glass stem of a mercury thermometer and is suitable for use in industrial environments. And because the "stick" thermometer does not contain mercury, the risk of accidental splashing of mercury is eliminated.
If the cost of ownership is taken into account, a digital thermometer is less expensive than a mercury thermometer. If you use a mercury thermometer, you'll need to invest in a device or hire someone to clean it up after a mercury splash.
Mercury thermometers cannot be adjusted after calibration. Corrections must be applied to the measured temperature to calibrate the actual temperature. This is time-consuming and prone to miscalculations. A digital thermometer performs the math for you, and the displayed temperature accurately represents the actual measured temperature.
If the mercury thermometer is not used under the same conditions used at the time of calibration, it may be necessary to correct the mercury column outcropping. Digital thermometers do not need to match your calibration conditions to achieve accurate measurements. All you need to do is meet the immersion requirements (seven centimeters (2.8 inches) for the 1551A Ex, for example).
